This is pretty much the first fan art I've ever done, apart from that Rossetti Lilah for [livejournal.com profile] jennyo's Lay of Westley of Wyndham.

Can anyone ([livejournal.com profile] dafnap?) explain to me how to keep it from making all those very defined gradations of shading when I turn the .psd into a .jpg?

ETA: I looked at this on [livejournal.com profile] girlwithjournal's macintosh tonight, and the Mach bands (thank you, [livejournal.com profile] compilerbitch) aren't visible on it, but what is visible is the fact that there are some flaws I had no idea about. Damn it, why won't they show up on my computer? Then I could fix them.

They are called Mach bands, caused when two different colours touch each other with a well-defined edge. Human vision can spot edges much better than colours, which (to cut a long story short) is why it happens. It could be that you have your JPEG compression options turned up a bit too much -- try upping the quality setting. If this doesn't fix it, you could experiment by adding a *very* small amount of noise to the image, which tends to help break up the Mach bands so they become invisible.

(Guess who has been supervising Part 1B Computer Graphics for the last two weeks...!)
