It's useful being over 21 when you go out with minors; if the waiter says "You are over twenty-one, right?" you can reply affirmatively with a perfectly straight face.
That really works in the Bay area? I've always found California one of the more tricky states to drink in (even though I have now been over 21 for some years!) Well, I guess in SoCal it's OK if you go to Chinese or Mexican run restaurants, maybe even Italian-owned.
My brother was once Id'd when he ordered an *alcohol free* beer! And I have been ID checked once in the bar area, and then again in the restaurant of the same establishment. But in New York, I've never even been asked for ID.
