After about two hours of sleep in the wee hours of Friday morning, I got up at 4:15am in order to go to the airport. It was a bit of a rush, but I ended up getting there in time. The flight had a stopover in Nashville and then went on to Long Island. Flying in to Nashville was odd, because I'd never realized that Tennessee would have so many trees. Don't ask me why, I just didn't. It was like every possible space that didn't have a building had trees, instead. No real open space. When the plane landed in Nashville, I got another surprise, because when I stood up from my seat I heard someone say "Darcy!" behind me. It turned out that Russian John from UCCE was on the flight as well, with his girlfriend Marcy, going to Hartford for a weekend vacation. So I ate lunch with them during the stopover, and then the plane departed for Islip.

That leg of the flight went far more quickly, for a start because it was actually about half the length (or less) of the first leg, but also because I talked to the girl next to me for most the time. She was from Long Island but had been living in Berkeley for the past year. She had a bag of soaps from The Juniper Tree; she said that she was stocking up because she couldn't get anything like them on the east coast. She also made me promise to go to the shop at some point, since I said I never had.

[livejournal.com profile] sampiano met me at the airport, accompanied by the Girl in Pink and her little brother, who's absolutely adorable. Sam seems not to have noticed this, probably because he's too busy watching Christine the entire time. :) Anyway, we went back to his place and had dinner and watched "Chicago" (finally!) and snuck onto the beach after it got dark; while at the beach, we saw Mars (we think; it was awfully bright and large so it probably was) and saw teeny tiny fireworks going off on the opposite shore, namely over in Connecticut. I picked up a little white stone; there were masses of them, glowing on the beach in the moonlight. The first thing that I noticed when I stepped out of the car at Sam's house was that it smelled like the East Coast, something I haven't smelled for ages. Christine asked if this was because there was grass, but I pointed out that we do actually have grass on the West Coast too. I think what it actually was is grass + humidity, which is probably why I don't specifically remember the scent from when I visited the Viertels a bit over a year ago.

The next morning, Sam took me to the train station and I went over to Manhattan and met up with [livejournal.com profile] livredor and Jen. The flat that [livejournal.com profile] livredor's friend lent them is absolutely beautiful and incredibly posh, so I had lots of fun living in luxury for half a day. I got to laugh at their surprised enthusiasm over oreos, and more to the point, I got to eat lots of oreos myself, which I hadn't had for ages. Except on the plane on the way over, coincidentally. We then went for a walk along the river and enjoyed the sun and the water. After shabbat went out, I did some ironing (of dresses, mostly) and we ran errands and one of the doors in the flat bit my finger and tried to trap me in the bathroom.

The next day was the wedding, which was very exciting. Will has some very nice friends, and the food was kosher Chinese (trust New York...), and Jen looked lovely in her wedding dress, and there was lots of Israeli dancing (although a lot of it consisted of us going round in circles, which is still fun and bouncy and energetic). And I managed to sing the blessing that I was supposed to sing without messing up, and Jen looked very happy, and yeah. And Jen and Will smashed the glass together, and you could hear it go crunch. And Jen's married, now! This is very terrifying, as it's the first wedding of someone my age whom I've known for several years. I'm sure I should write more about the wedding itself, but I'm not quite sure what to say. Jen had calligraphed the contracts, and they were of course beautiful. I despair of ever learning the various Jewish songs that everyone else knows, even [livejournal.com profile] livredor, who's from England, and which I've generally never even heard. Sometimes I curse my parents for not sending me to Hebrew School, though I'm sure I would have been cross for other reasons if they had done so.

Then Sam and [livejournal.com profile] livredor and I went back to Sam's place, and I sang and Sam played piano, and I came to the sad realization that I was on the East Coast in summer but was too late for fireflies. We eventually took [livejournal.com profile] livredor to the train station, and Sam and I went back and watched a little of "Mr Bean" (which I had never seen before as my parents don't care for it), and we went over some of my stuff for choir.

This morning we went and picked up Christine and Edward and went to an entirely different beach, and I picked up various shells, and we played frisbee, and I actually managed to throw the frisbee properly upon occasion. I need lots of practice. There was a dead horseshoe crab on the beach, which made me sad, but it was still fun to see one again, even if it was dead. The shells on the beach intrigued me, too, by being so similar and yet so different from the ones on the west coast; half of them are identical and the other half you never see, whereas there are also a bunch on the west coast of which there were none here.

We then went to catch my plane, except we stopped for lunch, and I nearly missed my plane on account of this. Well, I didn't really, but I did only get to the airport 20 minutes before the plane left, and the skycap looked at me sternly. But I did get a chocolate egg cream at lunch, which made up for a lot.

This time the plane touched down briefly in Baltimore, and I had a proper stopover in Phoenix. But we got to Phoenix early enough that I managed to get a flight to Oakland that was earlier than the one I was meant to take. So I got home at 9-ish instead of 11-ish, which I'm very happy about. Oh, and yummy Mexican food at the Phoenix airport.

I was just barely too late to submit a proper drabble this week, which is a pity, because it was a cool challenge and I'd have liked to do three, but I did write a late drabble.

Oh, it sounds lovely! Too bad about the fireflies, though. I miss fireflies.

I can't believe you're at the stage where you can wander the airports of the United States and meet people you know. I can only do that with Oxford, which is quite a bit smaller than the USA.

Anyway, that is most cool. :)

I had noticed. Just Christine is more cute :)

I have loads of photos of Darcy and the wedding which will be posted shortly.

Hooray for you visiting Darcy! I had such a great weekend and a lot of it was your fault.

From now on I'm going to call him Russian John. :)

BTW, Chicago is playing on Friday at Wheeler (go SUPERB!). Interested in seeing it again? I'm trying to get together people to go see it.
