Did your doctor mention the difference between the common and classical variants? The classical contains the "flashing light" prodrome, but the common (the boring one that I happen to get) does not - it "merely" includes pain behind one eye, nausea &c. So, it could be well be the common variant that you have (not that that helps). I have also tried codeine, which is does not stop the pain but at least makes it bearable.
