Yesterday we rode out to Linn's Fruit Bin, and I discovered that something is surely wrong with my bike gears in Berkeley. My dad's bike rode like a dream. Just after we left the car, I startled a turkey vulture out of the brush near the road; it must have been dining on something, because I think I caught a whiff of rotting flesh in the air it stirred up with its wings. Just around the bend from this, a deer bounded across the road, and its hooves made a sharp sound on the asphalt. Another deer followed it, and it nearly fell it was trying so hard to get across the road; it must have thought I was going to hit it with my bike. We had fun at Linn's, and John was there, and Renee, whom I haven't seen in years; and they now have a small blond grandson, who was adorable and playing with a truck, and John was teaching him the word persimmon as he harvested said tree. And their daughter's engaged, as of yesterday. They're building a new, huge house up the road from the store, so we walked up the road to see it. Amazing views of rolling hills and sky and steep valleys. On the way back to the car, I saw another two deer at the far side of a pasture, and several flocks of California quial, topknotted and redcheeked, ran across the road. And the turkey vulture flopped up again as I neared the car. I've never seen that much wildlife around that area.

We watched "What's Cooking?" again in the evening, 'cause my mom wanted Lin to see it. I obviously had no objections. I spent some time with Anne, too.
