Somewhat belated thoughts on Angel 5.10

darcydodoI watched the episode last night, of course, but I didn't manage to see the first ten minutes or so until tonight. So although I had been told what happened before I got there, I couldn't really comment until now....
People are going on about Lindsey somehow claiming to be Doyle, but he's not. Even if Spike knew who Doyle was, Lindsey's not remotely claiming to be him. What he said is "Call me Doyle." As when Buffy called Giles her Q, it's a parallel, and in this case also a way to prevent Lindsey's name from filtering back to Angel... as well as being significant in Lindsey's mind. His visions are fake, Spike is a (possibly/probably) fake champion, and Lindsey is acting to Spike as Doyle did to Angel, even to the extent of sending him on his first mission as a Champion (don't we love that word) and persuading him that he's been sent to him, not just providing "visions." But I do like the touch that Eve hasn't actually yet called Lindsey by his own name... nor has Lindsey addressed Eve by hers. She thought that Eve was playing Lindsey, somehow setting him up to fall in her own gameplan, but I think that a) Lindsey is playing Eve, and b) Lindsey's game isn't actually to kill Angel, despite what got said at the end of "Destiny." He's fucking with Angel's head, yes, obviously, but he's also fucking with Spike. And yes, it's to get at Angel, but his end goal is pretty clearly not Angel's death, otherwise he would've just let Angel die from the parasite and that would be that.
But also, let's consider the following. Eve and Lindsey sent the Spike-containing-amulet to Angel, and they recorporealized Spike. However, it was Lilah who gave the amulet to Angel. And, as Wesley said, why give the amulet and the lawfirm to Angel at the same time, knowing what the amulet would do? So either the Senior Partners wanted Spike out of the way and knew that the amulet would be given to Spike, and now Lindsey & Eve are playing their own unrelated game... or the Senior Partners actually had nothing to do with the amulet. Which makes things all way too confusing, really, in terms of then-the-Hellmouth-wouldn't-have-collapsed-etc. But, then, why did the Senior Partners want Spike out of the way? Or was he just a conveniently souled vampire to allow Angel not to be burnt into a crisp when the First Evil was defeated? Next question: If the SP really were behind the amulet all along, how did Lindsey & Eve find out about it, in order to send it back to W&H? Lindsey's not been around, and Eve's seemingly fairly new around the place, too. (Although she does mock Wesley in "Conviction" that she always might be neither young nor a woman.) So what if Lilah were, in fact, in cahoots with Lindsey? What if, asjennyo clearly would like to believe, Eve is Lilah, albeit in a different (and more anorexic, and more annoying) body? There are obviously problems with this scenario, such as Eve's clear sexual interest in Lindsey, and also that Lindsey (in my eyes) is the one playing Eve, not vice versa. (Although if Eve were somehow Lilah, I'd realize that couldn't be the case, 'cause in the end Lilah would always play Lindsey, especially now that she's had a few more years at W&H than he has.)
Regardless of these fairly incoherent maunderings, I thought it was an excellent and hilarious episode.
