Friday evening. I went to the concert of the Cal Jazz program; it was the two advanced combos and the big band. I don't dislike jazz, but I don't love it, either. OK, that's not entirely true; I love old jazz, and I love vocal jazz. But the combos weren't my idea of a great musical time, though I did like one piece by Chick Corea called "Windows." The big band was more fun, partially because I knew someone in it (that was the entire reason I'd gone to the concert), partially because they did some slightly more "classical" pieces (one was by Dizzy Gillespie), and partially because their conductor was fantastic, as well as fantastically funny. And he did some scat to one of their pieces, and he had this Louis Armstrong-esque voice, and half the words were complete nonsense, and his facial expressions were priceless.
Saturday I slept until ten something, then talked to
livredor on IM for a while, and then I took
girlwithjournal to Trader Joe's and Safeway (nearly typed Sainsbury's, there) to do shopping. Then made focaccia (which I never can spell; is that right?), two loaves, to take to the P5 retreat (potluck/rehearsal/sleepover). The second loaf managed to set off the fire alarms, though the first one hadn't, so batteries were removed. I wish they were less sensitive. It's very annoying.
The retreat was great fun; much yummy food, some good rehearsing (and Christmas music! I love Christmas music!), and playing Cranium. That is one cool game. Though the green category sucks. Blue is fantastic, though. :) Some of us watched Spaceballs, too, but it was very late by then, and I fell asleep part way through. My DVD has widescreen. That is a wonderful thing. Lily's running commentary scared me, however. ("Oh, it's so romantic!" Romantic? Spaceballs? And she was serious, too. I, by contrast, am seriously disturbed by her.)
There was sangria and mango lassi (thanks to Anand), and
leech brought pies, including a gorgeous raspberry one, and just yum.
Today, drove
leech back to his place, and hung out there with him and
grimhild. We played a game of the Great Brain Robbery, and we played Taiga on
mrjonesandme's PS2, and banging away at a big plastic drum in order to shoot water at space ships ranks among the sillier of activities. The Japanese are a very strange people. Went to a burger place for lunch, and I got gorgonzola on my hamburger. Hooray.
And now I'm thoroughly exhausted. Or I am still, rather, since sleep last night was scantier than I might have liked. I think it'd be cool to have a longer P5 retreat at some point.
