On
livredor's suggestion, I went to the Rue des Rosiers today and had falafel and aubergine for lunch. Then I had a blintz, 'cause they looked really yummy (and were, in fact). I must remember to go back there some time when it's not shabbat, 'cause obviously most of the shops were shut. :)
Then I took the métro up to Porte St-Ouen and wandered through various marchés towards Porte de Clignancourt. I'd already run out of money by the time I got there (buying lunch and some things I needed, like a notebook), so fortunately I wasn't tempted to buy anything. I actually think this may be a good rule for me in the future, as I am always tempted by bric-a-brac, and if I haven't got money, I can't talk myself into purchasing it. Actually, part of my money had gone towards buying some used books the instant I passed a booksale this morning, which just goes to prove the point that I can't resist buying tempting things. One of them was «Un barrage contre le pacifique», by Marguerite Duras, though, and I've started reading it and am actually finding it not too hard going as of yet. (I thought
livredor would appreciate this.)
I may well go back up to the markets tomorrow, with a less heavy backpack (I had lots of unnecessary things in it by the time I got there), and wander around lots more; I love the little twisting alleys with their carpets and entirely random shops. I keep expecting to suddenly stumble into a shop that's actually from hundreds of years ago and somehow just forgot to close or cease to exist.
