I was tempted, but then I found out that this is a spawn of Neopets, and I've sworn to avoid those like the plague that they are.

Neopets are this wierd world of online creatures that you treat as pets. You play games with them and on the site to get them food and make them strong - it's kind of like online pokemon, but different. There's an entire world develped around them. It can also be dangerously addictive.
