Technically, I know, when I say words like "stock" and "stalk," they sound the same, but I picture them as slightly different in my head, and in my mouth-shape. If I answer that way, though, it claims I have a midland accent, which I don't. So if I go with how I know they actually come out of my mouth, then it properly places me as west-coast.

What American accent do you have?
Your Result: The West

Your accent is the lowest common denominator of American speech. Unless you're a SoCal surfer, no one thinks you have an accent. And really, you may not even be from the West at all, you could easily be from Florida or one of those big Southern cities like Dallas or Atlanta.

Interestingly, if I only answer the questions that I know I learned during high school, rather than ones that I picked up on my own at some point or other, then I only get 80% or 86% (there's one question that I don't know if I learned the answer in high school or not).

You paid attention during 100% of high school!

85-100% You must be an autodidact, because American high schools don't get scores that high! Good show, old chap!

It got me right (as right as it could):

What American accent do you have?
Your Result: North Central

"North Central" is what professional linguists call the Minnesota accent. If you saw "Fargo" you probably didn't think the characters sounded very out of the ordinary. Outsiders probably mistake you for a Canadian a lot.

It put me in the Midlands. Where I have never lived. (Second choice, "the West", which I agree is a significant oversimplification, linguistically speaking (and really, is it possible to speak other than linguistically? ;> ).)

"American high schools [sic] don't get scores that high." Riiiight. Even assuming that they meant to say "high school _students_", it's still a ridiculous statement.

Ha-ha! I got Midlands. My English is more standard than your English, even though I come from SoCal.
