What did I think about the new BSG? Gosh. Well, I'll have to be brief as I should already be asleep.

I have no fucking clue what's going on, but I liked the episode a lot. As Kathy (or someone) said, Lucy Lawless has been "special guest star" for so long that you knew she'd have to disappear somehow eventually, so the boxing wasn't much of a surprise. I actually mentioned boxing back at the beginning of the episode because I thought they'd box Sharon Athena once she got resurrected, so it was cool that the concept did get pulled out and dusted off by the end.

As to Kara being One Of The Five... well, those five must have different biology from the rest of the cylons, I guess, since Kara got pretty thoroughly tested by cylon and mankind way back when, if I recall correctly. (Or at least she got carved up by the cylons when they grabbed her ovaries.) I wonder if that explains how she figured out how to fly the raider, though. Also, we know that Kara's been around humans for a long time, at least long enough to have been in training, gotten engaged to Zach, etc. It's not clear how long Boomer was around.

What do the Five have to do with the 13th colony? That's something that I just don't comprehend. The humans' holy books talk about the Eye of Jupiter, which was part of that temple/supernova complex, while the temple and Eye are also linked to the cylon "chosen one" (whatever that concept comes from). (And if D'Anna's the chosen one, what's the deal with Leoben's religious visions?) Kara's one of the Five, apparently, and she's got that image of the Eye implanted in her subconcious somehow, but we don't know why. I do love the idea that, as one of the Five, she's pretty much the Most Religious Human ...umm... we've got who doesn't come from Geminon.

All right, I seem to have devolved into mostly wittering, so it's sleepy time.

Wait, what? Kara? I missed something. Was that actually clear from D'Anna's vision or whatever? Or what?

Anyway, I enjoyed the episode too. Interesting observation about "special guest star" -- hadn't occurred to me, I just figured she was famous enough and in a small enough role to warrant the title. Though come to think of it, when she started appearing regularly, I guess I did notice that "special guest star" seemed weirder than it had when she first appeared.

We just started watching BSG around the beginning of this month -- we flew through all of the miniseries, series 1, series 2, season 2.5/webisodes, and the first half of season 3 in about two weeks or so, which meant that thankfully we only had to wait about a week for this episode to air. But of course now we have to wait again for the next episode! So unfair. It was nice watching as many episodes in a day as we wanted, like we did when we finally watched all of Buffy for the first time last summer... Ah well.

I also thought they were broadly hinting that Kara's a cylon, but not so much so that I'd feel cheated if she weren't. She didn't have to be a cylon to have a vision of the Eye of Jupiter[*]--evidently there are human prophets and visionaries.

[*] Another god referred to by the Roman name--I think they're comfortable mixing-and-matching, since his wife, in-show, is "Hera". But Mars/Ares may be the only god referred to by both the Greek and the Roman names, unless you can think of another. And I don't recall any Egyptian gods yet--though they may be worried about looking like a Stargate knock-off...

Wait, that was Lucy Lawless? I'm not a regular BSG watcher and the only ones I've seen recently were last season's cliffhanger and now this season's opener. But with the different hair, I didn't realize that it was her until you mentioned it. (I tend to tune out during opening credits.) Anyway, whoa.

I assume you've seen "I Am The Very Model Of A Heroine Barbarian"?

It's the only Major-General parody I've ever seen that's any good. And as a classicist, you'd get bonusy goodness out of it...

BTW...

Are we sure just which 6 it was that accompanied Athena back to Galactica? I assume it was "Caprica 6" (the one with the Baltar visions), but do we know that for sure?

I have to admit -- I'm back in it. I'm not sure if it's Kara given how much of a nod her way we're getting. They wouldn't be that obvious, right? (Except of course in matters of love, sex, 3-ways and broken hearts -- ekh!) Maybe Roslyn? Also, I didn't offer the special guest star tip as you indicated. Maybe Chris.

Speaking of special guest star. Veronica Mars is really good about having them, don't you think? We left off at the break with the murder of a long time special guest star, and tonight the show resumed with the investigation commencing. Bring it on! I quite enjoyed tonight's episode.
