Veteran's Day

I tried to sleep in. Oh, I tried. Instead (as I mentioned in my previous post), I woke up at about 9:15 (having gone to bed at around 1am) feeling like I'd slept until 1pm. Not it the really well-rested sense, but in the dry eyes and throat and slight headachey feeing. I spent the rest of the morning lazing around in my pajamas and figuring out Season 3 dates in order to make sure that I could set my Back in the Day fic when I wanted.
I had a relative amount of success there; I had to set "Revelations" a week before it actually aired, but there was good precedent for this, because "Band Candy" had to be set the week before it aired, given the date of the SAT (first Saturday in November). That was November 7 in 1998, so "Band Candy" ends on Friday, November 6, since Buffy says she has the test the next day. In "Revelations," Buffy comments at one point that it's a Tuesday night, and the episode itself stretches from the day before (Monday, November 9) to the Thursday of that week (November 12).
Then I washed my hair and somehow ran out of hot water, despite having only spent about half an hour there (more like 20 minutes before the hot water started going, anyway), but it was nice to get my hair clean. After that, I drove up to Skyline Boulevard to research for my story.
It turns out there's a regional preserve up there, a really large one, the Robert Sibley Volcanic Regional Preserve, or something like that. One of the trails actually leads up to an old caldera, but I didn't have the time (nor was I wearing the appropriate clothing) to hike all that way. Most of the housing is incredibly new developments, looking about a year old at the most, so the area's really quite posh. Which is what I'd expect from the Oakland hills, but on the other hand, it's really awfully far from civilization; it takes about fifteen minute just to drive up there from down in Oakland proper. There are eucalyptus forests and live oak and some tree that I can't place but which has catkins. And lots more stuff in the preserve itself. Apparently there are mountain lions and deer, too, at least according to the information placards at the entrance to the hiking trails. I hiked around just the base of one trail very briefly; I want to go back at some point, definitely. Though preferably not during lyme disease season, as there are ticks up there.
After I'd done sufficient "research," I headed back out west and went to
girlwithjournal's, where she and
psychopepsquad and jet girl were watching "The Emperor's New Groove." I saw about two thirds of it; it's really funny, and not at all Disney-ish. After that, we sat around for a bit, and
girlwithjournal worked on her French and I worked on my fic. Then the two of us went to dinner at a pub up on College in Oakland, that I've been to before with my parents; they usually have Fat Tire, but they didn't last night, which was annoying. I had a shrimp and avocado quesadilla, which sounds really disturbing, but was actually really good.
We drove back to Girl's place, and I finished my fic (hurrah!), then went home and didn't go to sleep until 2:30, 'cause, well, I didn't. But I thought I'd sleep until 10 and have a decent amount of sleep... instead, I woke up at 7. Fun. But today's being good so far.... We'll see.
