I was googling for information about yellow mushrooms, and one of the pages had the following Google summary:

"The poisonous yellow staining mushroom, or yellow stainer, can grow to over 10 cm in diameter. It is easily mistaken for a horse."

Ah, the joys of an excerpt!

I have once seen a taxonomy database screwed up enough to decide that a hippopotamus was a fungus.

Both wrong, it's a prokaryote. You can tell by the lack of internal structure. *ew*

Well, historically, it was thought to be an alga, but under closer investigation, some algae were reclassified as prokaryotes and even Protista, so perhaps you just had an old textbook. Again, damn those public schools! :)

we are ever so backward.
of course, they are still teaching kids about "feudalism" in high school, so it's no wonder i was given the wrong information about the status of the noble hippo.

Is this for the question Zoe has? I can't answer general fungal questions, but I know who can...

I have access to many pretty fungus pictures. Did she identify it? If she's curious still, the professor I will be teaching for this semester rocks when it comes to identifying fungi, and is a very nice person to boot.

Upon bruising the cap, stem or swollen base of this fungus it gives off an inky smell and turns bright yellow
eh? what qualifies a smell as inky, anyhow? did you have a chance to sniff it?
