I've finally decided to make a userpic for puzzle hunts. This is a slightly altered version of our new team logo (Scrabble tile-stacking courtesy of mconst).

This post is also in no way a suggestion that [livejournal.com profile] lahosken might wish to make an lj account solely for the purposes of reading locked posts that may also deal with puzzle hunts. (You know that you can still comment anonymously if you so desire, right?)

Out of curiosity, do you happen to know anyone who's planning on participating in this?

Actually, I believe one cannot comment anonymously beneath a lock, since an anonymouse has no viewing access to a locked post.

OpenID might be a better bet.

Yeah, you can friend an OpenId account, then the person has access to your locked posts. They have to have a website with some code in the header, or else they can create an identity at MyOpenID. That means that LJ knows who they are, because they either have to own the particular website to be able to put the code in, or they have to know the password to MyOpenID.

I think there might be a problem with commenting though, cos at the moment, LJ stupidly counts OpenID comments as anon comments (which sort of defeats the point!), and you can't make anon comments on friendslocked posts. But at least Lahosken will be able to read them.

If this posts correctly, then I owe greythistle a soda.

(It's not that I want to post anonymously. It's just that the username "lahosken" was already taken by some ro-bot doppleganger of my blog feed. I'm too vain to to be "lahosken2".)

As long as [livejournal.com profile] darcydodo's lj doesn't become anymore like /. than it has here, we're all good. :D

People post comments. A subset of people mod[erate] comments up or down by assigning a score (1-5); they can also apply a label such as "funny," "informative," "troll." Any registered user (I think) can meta-moderate to help balance the system--read ten mod scorings and agree/disagree with their accuracy.

One advantage to this system, when it works, which it often doesn't, is that readers can set a "threshold": comments scored below that threshold won't be visible by default. One can still click to access them, but it cuts down on some of the noise. There is a lot of noise, and some interesting signal buried within it (to borrow the Usenet adaptation of ... anyway).

Hi! This is Emily; I met you at the music party yesterday. I just found your livejournal via [livejournal.com profile] scazon and discovered that you do puzzle hunts, which is pretty nifty. For today's "It's a Small World" story: I was solving with mconst at the Mystery Hunt this year.

Yeah, as of a couple days ago I finally hit the point where I've been told by enough people that my userpic looks nothing like me that I'm going to actually do something about it. Of course, I'll probably end up changing it a picture of a llama or something, which won't be any more helpful...

There's a decent chance that I'll be remote solving myself next year, since I'm planning to be abroad. Codex is really remote-solver friendly, so that would be fun! (Kevin (the Duke) and Andrew (who asked about ciphers) are also on Codex.)
