Date: 2003-09-19 07:06 am (UTC)A golem is an animated statue of a man, in short. I think it's originally from Jewish legend, but it comes up other places these days. The Jewish one had a word placed in its mouth, IIRC. (
The OED says: "In Jewish legend, a human figure made of clay, etc., and supernaturally brought to life; in extended use, an automaton, a robot." The etc. is bronze or other materials, I think. :)
