I didn't make the new icon, but I can't remember who did, either. Anyway, of the following two, which should I use (or both, since 50 is really an awful lot)?
or
?
I really want to make a more-obviously-Michael-Whelan Michael Whelan icon, but ever since the archives got removed from his official site, the only access I have to most of his pictures is by scanning them in from my beautiful, lovely, wonderful book of his art. And a lot of those have a strange silver line across the bottom from the ink rubbing off the previous page. Besides, I'd have to actually figure out what picture to use. I was thinking the cover of The Changeling Sea, given as how that's also one of my very favorite books. *ponders*

I don't think you're paying him respect by trying to find ways to get round that. I know I'm obsessive about these things, but when someone has actually made it clear that they don't want people plastering their original work all over the place, then it seems reasonable to respect their wishes, even if you don't respect the law or the general principle. Just sayin.

Re: copyright, we've had this discussion numerous times in various guises; and according to the people who run the site, the images weren't taken offline because of copyright protection, they were taken offline because they redesigned the site.
And if I have his name in the keywords for the icon, how am I not paying him respect? I want to use his artwork because I like it. Anyway, there's no way it says anything like that in the law, so either talk from the legal side of things or talk from the how-things-actually-work side of things; but don't mix them just to start up an old argument or because you're being a patent lawyer's daughter.
