We watched part of Amélie in French today, much to my delight (I'd known that we were going to, and have been anticipating it all weekend); but the best part is that I actually understood bits. I'm glad that I've seen it twice already, because it means that I can concentrate on trying to understand the French and not worry that I'm missing the plotline by not reading the subtitles. (If I read the subtitles, there's no way I'd even hear a single thing that's being said, let alone comprehend it. That's how I am with reading and listening at the same time. Not a good habit, this automatic tuning-out; makes taking notes in lectures absolute hell.)

So I'm hopeful that by the end of my time in France this summer, I'll at least be good with the comprehension of spoken French, even if my putting-together of sentences still sucks. It's not that I'm afraid to make mistakes, it's that I'm afraid that the mistakes I make will give the sentence a completely different meaning than I intend. A friend of my mother's once told me that for the entire year she spent in France, she simply used every verb in its infinitive form, and this actually caused the French people to understand her better than if she'd attempted to conjugate the verbs — provided she spoke with the accent that French people use in English. ;) Hopefully I won't be quite this desperate, but it's an amusing thought.

ETA: This stupid computer thinks it's January 4, 1970. And 8:57pm. WTF?? Also, what the hell sort of mood icon is that for thirsty, anyway?!

Vous avez donc regardé Amélie? C'est à dire que j'en suis bien jalouse! Tu as très bien fait d'en comprendre un peu; la langue de ce film n'est pas si facile.

De toutes façons tu devrais savoir que ton français va de mieux en mieux. En bavardant avec moi tu as déjà construit de très belles phrases. Quant aux conjugaisons, elles sont moins difficiles en parlant; c'est souvent l'orthographe seulement qui différencie entre les formes.

Bisous,

Talking of which, do you (or anybody?) have any idea how [livejournal.com profile] yvesilena manages to make her entries appear to come from the future? This has been bugging me for a while now!
