Hmm. Met some other people who will be here over the summer. Good thing. Met, in fact, the person who is my neighbor. Also good thing. Realized just how much less fun it actually is playing "I have never" with people you don't know, despite that fact that you don't know any of the answers in advance. Not such a good thing. Played the longest game of "I have never" in my entire life: good thing, and also, actually, good in that while it was amusing, it didn't manage to uncover my "little secret" (no, I don't announce the fact that I'm not straight right off to everyone and anyone, because I don't know how it'll be received), since lots of girls have kissed another girl, and nothing else more specific was asked.

(Another, less fun, drinking game, that we never played at Oxford: goes by various names, but involves cards, and different cards have different forfeits. Kings, add a rule, queens, do an I have never, etc. This eventually led to I have never, 'cause we agreed it was a better game, by and large.)

Wanted a second hamburger, but only got one; good thing, from point of view of my digestion problem, bad thing, from point of view of still being vaguely hungry. Lots to drink: probably a good thing from any way you look at it. :)

Turns out that the Matrix came out on May 16, not will be out on June 16th, which [livejournal.com profile] wychwood pointed out to me; this means that I can probably see it this weekend. Since it's a three-day weekend (yippee!), may go to Giverny; should really get out of Paris, because just how much can one wander around the city? OK, lots, but I'm boring and don't know where to go. Suggestions always welcome, and I may even take them (next weekend, if not this one).

Not actually drunk, despite my mood icon; vaguely dizzy, but I could have masses more and be fine. Just can't type properly any more on first go. ;) I was commended on how hardcore I am. ("You look so square, Darcy, but really...") This is, of course, a very jaded compliment, but you know, I'll take 'em where I can get 'em.

ETA: Given that I was at least partially drunk, my vaguely-English accent came to the fore, as it is wont, and was commented on. I do not understand why this happens when I am drunk. I thought one's native accent was supposed to emerge when one is less than sober!

Grr. I hate when what I'm typing is deleted randomly. Anyway:

The barbeque yesterday wasn't a proper BBQ either. It was more like a 'come queue up and get your free hamburger' party, with 1-euro beers on the side. On reflection, the last proper BBQ I was at was [livejournal.com profile] elemy's end-of-year BBQ last year, which, being in England, got rained on. And then degenerated into a chocolate fondue party. :)

Random fact learned this morning (from my Let's Go Paris guide): the color puce was originally invented to hide the fact that there were fleas crawling all over Versailles.

Damn it, I know there were other things I thought of this morning and thought 'gee, I should put those in my journal.' That's the whole reason I got a livejournal, was so that I could set down the random things that float around my head and then go poof and disappear. Only, when you have to go shower and get dressed and whatnot before going down to the computer room, thoughts have a tendency to escape first.

ETA: Not that anyone's ever going to see this, but I remembered something I wanted to comment on! I realized that during the course of the evening, I said 'I hear you' way more than I ever have done before. I'm convinced that this is the fault of [livejournal.com profile] sschmitt. So grr to her. :)

On [livejournal.com profile] livredor's suggestion, I went to the Rue des Rosiers today and had falafel and aubergine for lunch. Then I had a blintz, 'cause they looked really yummy (and were, in fact). I must remember to go back there some time when it's not shabbat, 'cause obviously most of the shops were shut. :)

Then I took the métro up to Porte St-Ouen and wandered through various marchés towards Porte de Clignancourt. I'd already run out of money by the time I got there (buying lunch and some things I needed, like a notebook), so fortunately I wasn't tempted to buy anything. I actually think this may be a good rule for me in the future, as I am always tempted by bric-a-brac, and if I haven't got money, I can't talk myself into purchasing it. Actually, part of my money had gone towards buying some used books the instant I passed a booksale this morning, which just goes to prove the point that I can't resist buying tempting things. One of them was «Un barrage contre le pacifique», by Marguerite Duras, though, and I've started reading it and am actually finding it not too hard going as of yet. (I thought [livejournal.com profile] livredor would appreciate this.)

I may well go back up to the markets tomorrow, with a less heavy backpack (I had lots of unnecessary things in it by the time I got there), and wander around lots more; I love the little twisting alleys with their carpets and entirely random shops. I keep expecting to suddenly stumble into a shop that's actually from hundreds of years ago and somehow just forgot to close or cease to exist.

A while ago, I posted the piece that I wrote for the Buffy/Angel Lyric Wheel. Sadly, no one commented on it. *sniffle* But I've revised it now (or at least added a couple bits), and I feel that this gives me license to repost it and see if it sparks more interest this time. ;)

Title: Shades of Madness
